We all belong to and are influenced by many cultures that influence our values, beliefs, experiences and behaviour. There are significant variations in the cultural processes of different Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities; these cultures are constantly changing and adapting. Indigenous students navigate the differences in their own community cultures and identity, with those of the school culture. Students feel safe and a sense of belonging at school when their culture is valued by those in school and boarding. Taking time to develop knowledge and awareness of particular cultural groups makes students feel valued and heard. It is also important to gain a broad understanding of Australia’s history of colonisation, skills for eliciting students’ concerns and strategies for negotiating shared understanding and participatory decision-making, where possible.
